So we all know that Alex Murdaugh’s trial was a hot topic for my February posts, but one thing I never touched on when I did my initial timeline of the events that led to his arrest was discussing what exactly he was arrested for on other occasions.
September 5, 2021: On this day, Alex was taken to jail because of an ongoing opioid addiction. A few days after this, the Supreme Court of South Carolina suspended his license to practice law in South Carolina because this was also when he began to be investigated for misusing funds.
September 16, 2021: Murdaugh was then arrested and charged with fraud and conspiracy in the assisted suicide scheme, it is claimed that the gunshot to the head incident was so that his living son, Buster would be able to collect life insurance money, so he was arrested with insurance fraud and filing a false police report. He was allowed to return to rehab, but he had to give up his passport.
September - October 2021: Gloria Satterfield’s family (Gloria was a well-known housekeeper and nanny for the family) sued Alex for defrauding them out of their settlement money.
October 6, 2021: Alex’s former law firm announced that they were suing to recover funds that he stole from clients and the firm.
October - December 2021: After being released from rehab, Alex is sent to jail with 2 felony counts of obtaining property by false pretenses, he was denied bond. On December 13th, a bond for $7 million was set, and he agreed to pay $4.3 million to the Satterfield family, but in total, he was indicted on 48 financial criminal charges.
January 21, 2022: A grand jury indicted Alex on 23 new charges (for a total of 71 charges) of him defrauding victims out of $8.5 million.
May 2022: An additional 4 charges were added involving insurance fraud, these charges included Cory Fleming.
July 14, 2022: This was when the big ordeal happened, he was charged with the murders of his wife and son, Maggie and Paul. He pleaded not guilty but was denied bond.
August 2022: A grand jury indicted him on charges of obtaining property under false pretenses, money laundering, and computer crimes. He stole $295k from his brother and the family law firm.
December 2022: Murdaugh was indicted on nine counts of tax evasion, which put him to be at over 100 financial crimes.
March 2, 2023: After three hours of deliberation, the jury finds Alex Murdaugh guilty of all 4 charges he was presented with. He was sentenced to two life terms.
