My Interview With Hounds

So, I have exciting news. When I did the deep dive over Hound’s music, I decided to reach out to him via DM and just ask him some questions, and he responded! So here is my interview with him!

Tell me about you.

My name is Andrew and I produce, engineer, mix, and master under the name of ‘hounds’ i currently reside in Calgary Canada. Rap & Pop are my favorite genres to work in.

I discovered you with DOGDEER, tell me about your experience working on that album.

The first DOGDEER feels like a lifetime ago. Yung Bambi the rapper/artist I worked with creating the DOGDEER series has been one of my best friends throughout my entire music career. We linked together just through some random SoundCloud group chat when we were both still in high school. Before I made the artistic shift to work on producing rap/pop I was making electronic music. DOGDEER is the first full-length project I worked on with a vocalist, this was the pivot in my career and sort of my realization that working with vocalists/rappers is what I wanted to do.

Tell me about “Scorn”.

Scorn!! Such an interesting tune. Kind of a funny story behind it. Long story short - back in 2017 my house burnt down and I lost everything, all my equipment, all my belonging along with hundreds of unreleased songs and projects. After I got back on my feet a couple of months after the tragedy and got a new laptop and speakers ‘Scorn’ was the solo first song I put out after. My head was in a weird place and I remember I was struggling with writer's block at the time but scorn was something I put together at that time.

What made you want to be a producer?

I used to play drums in some metal/hardcore bands with my older brother. He moved out of the house, and with my mom and sister, I moved away to a small town. Without my brother, there was no band for me to play in. The only thing I could think of musically that I could do by myself was producing!

Tell me about “Glizzy”.

just some crazy “phone” beat I made one night. I put that in quotes because I was spamming cowbells in replace of synths well before I knew there was some genre for it hahaha. But I made that beat and sent it over to Trippythakid. I think he had the whole song done for me in less than 2 hours- it was crazy.

You work a lot with TrippyThaKid, tell me about your relationship with him and working with him in general.

One of the kindest, funny, and most genuine dudes I’ve met through music. Love that dude and working with him is always a blast. His workflow is unmatched. He sent the full song back to me 30 mins after me sending the beats. His album coming soon is going to be amazing and I think I produced about half the songs!!

Tell me about “Myria”.

I think for the electronic music I put out myria was the first single I ever had sort of blow up on SoundCloud, I remember that one got me a lot of attention. Listening back to it and knowing that I had no true knowledge of music theory it impresses me that I could have put stuff out like that. Such a cool bounce to that track too!

What has been some of your favorite work that you have done?

My favorite work I’ve done is all the unreleased music I have. The music with Trippy, new music with Bambi, and some new artists I haven’t put out, like LIONSTORM from Amsterdam, khaki kid from Ireland, pmososa, and more. My favorite work of mine is always what I’m currently working on because I think my sound is constantly evolving and changing.

Tell me about “Frailty”

Frailty!! I love this song but I also loath it as well.  The released version wasn’t the final version of it. I lost the project file after having an old laptop completely crap out on me. but I had a bunch of people tell me to just release the version I had anyways. Although I love the song I listen to it and I just get bummed because I know the final version would have been even better. But oh well

Tell me about your plans for 2023.

2023 is all about working with more people and more artists. I want to release a project of my own as well. Mixed with instrumentals and songs with features vocalists.
