As this trial happens, I have continued to update because the circumstances around it are so wild to me, here we have this famous lawyer killing two of his loved ones, and as we dive deeper and deeper it just gets weirder.
Anthony Knecht takes the stand. He is the custodian of the records of Verizon Wireless. He has reviewed the records of Alex Murdaugh, Maggie Murdaugh, Paul Murduagh, Claude Rowe, Marty Cook, Rogan Gibson, Conner Cook, and Buster Murdaugh. I believe that it is good that he reviewed so many not just records and did not just focus on the three people who were involved because as for the jury, it shows more evidence pointing that it was Alex because other people have been removed as suspects, solely off of their phone record.
Maggie’s phone records indicate no call was taken after 9 pm, all went to voicemail. Alex called her at 9:04 pm and it went to voicemail, and any other calls also went to voicemail. I believe that this is beneficial knowledge because it gives the police force a more estimated time of death, therefore helping them build a case if they know the time and people have a believable alibi, then you can truly begin to focus on one suspect.
Paul McManigal, who is a digital forensic examiner is next to take the stand. He is asked if Paul’s phone was dead, and he says he can not recall, and that was all that we heard from him. I understand that it is part of the protocol for this to be done and I am glad it was done. Even though, for some people, they can see it as a waste of time. And if I were Paul and I got to take a little time off work to go do this, I would not mind at all.
Jonathan Vanhouten, who is a part of the U.S. Secret Service is next to take the stand, more specifically he is also a digital forensic examiner. He was asked to unlock Paul’s phone. He was asked to do it because, at the time, SLED did not have the technology to do this. I am glad though that they outsourced to find someone who could take care of it for them because it shows how much effort went into this case.
Harpoolitan then goes on to make another testimony that any of the phones reviewed should be asked by their owner to review them to make sure none of the contacts in it were changed. He also says that the specific iPhone 11 could belong to anyone, not just specifically Paul. I can understand the part of the testimony where people who are the owner of the phone could review that nothing was changed as something that would be beneficial for the jury, but I believe that part about the iPhone 11 potentially not being PAul’s to be bullshit because whether it was lock screen, or whatever social media he was logged into, I can guarantee that they could tell it probably belonged to Paul.
The next witness to take the stand is John Bedingfield who is part of the department of natural resources. He also sells firearms and is licensed to do so. He is also one of Alex’s cousins. He said that in 2016, Alex purchased rifles for his sons with silencers, but silencers are very common with hunters, so this is something one would not question. In 2018, a third weapon was purchased and picked up by Maggie. He says Croft was who contacted him, and he provided paperwork for all the guns, but suspiciously some of the paperwork for the third gun was missing.
