Damar Hamlin Update

Monday night, Bills’ safety Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest in the Bengals vs Bills game. But, a positive update, he is doing much better. This happened after a Bengals receiver tackled him. The event that took place was revealed as a “freak accident” but it was scary to see, especially since millions were watching it on TV. Though, his being in good health is a positive sign.

The first thing he asked was, “Did we win?”. An optimistic response, to say the least. The game though was postponed after he went into cardiac arrest on the field. He is unable to speak at the moment, but he can write, which is the ability they are using as his form of communication at the moment. He is also still in intensive care on a ventilator. The division chief of general surgery at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center says that everything appears to be going well with him, fortunately.

Sean McDermott, the coach of the Bills, and quarterback Josh Allen stated that this was the best news that they could receive. The support that Hamlin and his family received after this incident happened has been incredible. The Bills and Billsmafia have been incredibly supportive during this time and that is beautiful to see. When things like this happen, it’s scary, but the way that the public has been so positively receptive after this event is beautiful to watch.

The phenomenon that caused Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest during Monday’s game is called “commotio cordis” which is an incredibly rare event, This is the moment when the heart is just a bit off, and if there is a blow to the chest, this can cause someone to go into cardiac arrest. This is an incredibly rare thing to happen, and this time it did. Though no one is truly to blame for this, it was truly a freak accident.

It is too early to determine if Hamlin can return to the NFL. As of now, the main concern is getting Hamlin off the ventilator. He is at an incredibly vulnerable point right now, so the concern of whether or not he can play again is not really the concern of doctors, or even the Bills right now. For his sake, I hope he can play again because he is a great safety, but his health is more important than anything.
