Why Everyone Needs To Watch The Sex Lives Of College Girls

THERE ARE SPOILERS, JUST A HEADS UP.

The HBOMax show, “The Sex Lives Of College Girls” is a hit. Created by Mindy Kaling, the show features stars like Pauline Chalamet, Renee Rapp, Amrit Kaur, and Alyah Chanelle Scott. I believe that everyone needs to watch this show because not only is it incredibly funny, but the characters are all incredibly relatable, not only for college girls but for people in general. Season 1 is fully released and new episodes of Season 2 comes out on Thursdays.

The first character I want to touch on is Renee Rapp’s character, Leighton Murray. Leighton is a privileged girl and externally her life looks perfect, but she struggles internally with the world knowing she is gay. In the first season, she remains in the closet until the last episode, but in season 2, you see her character begin to explore being out as well as her sexuality in general. As someone who is bisexual, the reality of what she experiences is depicted perfectly. Although she is initially treated as the “mean girl” watching her open up and be the person she truly is incredibly inspiring to watch.

Pauline Chalamet’s character, Kimberly Finkle, is also inspirational for different reasons. One of the most relatable aspects, for me, is how she struggles financially. In college, I have struggled with this as well so to have a show depict this in a manner with no sugar-coating is incredibly inspiring to watch. Kimberly also grows as a person because she is from a sheltered small town, and college is very different. Watching her grow comfortable in her skin and grow with new experiences that she couldn’t have had in a small town like Gilbert, Arizona is incredibly relatable.

Amrit Kaur’s character, Bela Malhotra, is a personal favorite. She also grows a lot when she lives in a sheltered household. Also, a very serious situation involving her getting sexually harassed does take place. The way this show shows how the situation makes someone feel as well as how it is handled makes the show so real. But, Bela is also inspiring because she takes this horrible situation and makes the best out of it in a truly inspiring manner.

Alyah Chanelle Scott’s character, Whitney Chase is also inspiring because not only do you see her as a college athlete and her struggles within the sport, but you see her grow as a person. When she starts, her one goal is soccer, but as she grows up more in season 2, you watch her find things to love. Another interesting thing is her insecurities with relationships, this concept is very real.

Whether it is sexuality, financial issues, growing up after leaving a sheltered environment, sexual harassment, college sports, struggle with your own identity, or even insecurity within your relationship, this show presents it all, everyone in college or their life even,  will experience at least one of the following events in their life. This show does an incredible job of showing the reality of these situations as well as solutions. Mindy Kaling, if you read this, you killed it with this show. Male or female, I encourage you to watch this show because it is so real, but it is incredibly funny.
