9.22 WHAT THE FUCK IS KRATOM?

Kratom is a drug I can not fathom. The Mayo Clinic defines it as “an herbal extract that comes from the leaves of an evergreen tree (Mitragyna speciosa) grown in Southeast Asia. Kratom leaves can be chewed, and dry kratom can be swallowed or brewed. Kratom extract can be used to make a liquid product. The liquid form is often marketed as a treatment for muscle pain, or to suppress appetite and stop cramps and diarrhea. Kratom is also sold as a treatment for panic attacks.”

In reality, Kratom became popularized because a lot of people wanted to do a drug that wasn’t considered a drug. After all, it is a product you can buy legally at places like CBD stores. I think Kratom is a crock of shit personally, but anyone who can figure out how to make money off of it right now is brilliant. For example, The Paradise News recently wrote an article about Kratom promoting a brand of flavored Kratom named Hungry Hippo. Thier “elevator pitch” about this product is to help you sleep. They describe Kratom in their article as “Kratom, also known as Mitragyna speciosa, is a tropical evergreen tree found primarily in [Southeast] Asia. It has been traditionally used as herbal medicine since the 19th century. Its leaves contain compounds like alkaloids that have stimulating and opioid-like effects. These leaves can be ingested, brewed, crushed, and placed into gel capsules.” In this article, Happy Hippo’s products are described as “If you are looking for an effective way to get a good night’s sleep every time, Happy Hippo offers pesticide-free, laboratory-tested, high-quality, and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)-approved kratom strains in powder, capsules, and extracts. You can choose between balance, energy, and relaxation, depending on your preferences and needs.”

Even investing websites are encouraging investing in Kratom products because they are “the new wave”. StreetInsider has recently been encouraging people to invest in TART Global Alternatives which they state “develops, manufactures and distributes alternative products in categories such as tobacco, hemp, kratom, and other emerging segments of the CPG industry. Its flagship product is a nicotine-free/tobacco-free combustible with a patent-pending base material formulation, sold in several thousand U.S. stores. With over CAD $80 million in overall gross revenue annually, TAAT’s facilities include an [operation center] in Nevada, as well as a distribution [center] and multiple convenience stores in Ohio.”

To be honest with you, I wholeheartedly believe that this Kratom stuff is going to be the equivalent of everyone and their opinions on vaping within the next few years. I do not think it will affect as young of an audience as vaping did, but this product has not been tested to the extent that it needs to be and any research done on it is probably good research but corporations mess with products often which makes them no longer, at least in this case, healthy. Also, as their popularity grows, just like what happened with vape products, it is a concern that these products will no longer be used by their intended audience and much rather people who want to get high. Kratom is a crock of shit, do not mess with it.
